ABOUT US
The Developmental Center for Exceptional Children, Inc. (DCEC) was founded in 1973 by parents so their children would have a place to learn and develop, a goal the parents still have today. DCEC is a year round, center-based preschool program for children with disibilities and special needs. We provide a full day, year-round, center-based program with a staff to child ratio of 1 to 6. We serve 30 children with Down syndrome, cerebral palsy, autism, Fragile X, spina bifida, developmental delays and other disabilities who are eligible for services through the South Carolina Department of Disabilities and Special Needs. Our services are provided Monday through Friday, 7:30 am to 3:00 pm with extended hours until 5:00 pm for parents who are working or are in school.
Our main goal is to provide services which will encourage optimal growth and development for the children's special needs. DCEC provides nursing services for the children with special health care needs. We offer a developmentally appropriate environment that enhances the learning abilities of children with special needs. We contract with AnMed Health to provide physical, occupational and speech therapies. We also work with various public school districts in Anderson Couty for children ages 3-5 to continue his/her development according to the child's Individual Education Plan (IEP).
Until December 31, 2008, our program was funded by state dollars. However, SCDDSN cut our funding 100%. In June 2009, the state passed a Proviso which reinstated 40% of DCEC's funding. The partial funding was reauthorized for the fiscal year 2010-2011. However, it is based on attendance, per child, per day, for up to only 23 children/day. This is not a guaranteed source of income. Therefore, we are searching for private donations, corporate sponsorships and benefactors. We established our 501c3 status of a private, non-profit in August of 2010.
